MSPP 25th Anniversary Celebration A Great Success!

The Maryland School of Public Policy was honored to have Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer as keynote speaker to kick-off its 25 th Anniversary. Approximately 200 guests, including alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends, gathered in the Riggs Alumni Center on Friday, Oct. 27 to celebrate the School's accomplishments over the past 25 years. Justice Breyer entranced the audience with his clear, concise remarks related to democracy and the Constitution, based on his book Active Liberty

The program featured the history of the School from its inception which was captured through a video photo story of those who contributed to the school's success. Dean Steve Fetter and Provost William Destler provided remarks, followed by recollections and reflections on the School by Professor Allen Schick and College Park Professor Catherine Kelleher, former head of the School's Women in International Security (WIIS). Dr. Schick received a University of Maryland sports jacket in honor of his 25 years of service, but declared that he was “no where near finished teaching.” College Park Professor Bill Galston, former head of the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), and the Institute for Philosophy & Public Policy (IPPP), provided remarks on his experiences at the School.

Those in attendance were the first to see the School's new promotional video that is being distributed widely. Following the program, guests were given the opportunity to purchase Justice Breyer's book and have it signed by the author. The event was co-sponsored by the Saul I. Stern Professorship of Civic Engagement.

The celebration continued on Saturday, Oct. 28 with a tailgate at which over 100 alumni, faculty and staff raised a glass to the Terps, who did us proud by winning the football game against Florida State.
