Judith Lichtenberg has a joint appointment in the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy and the Department of Philosophy. She holds a B.A. in history and an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the City University of New York. She writes and teaches in the fields of ethics and political philosophy, with special interests in international ethics, race and ethnicity, higher education, and the mass media. She is coauthor (with Robert Fullinwider) of Leveling the Playing Field: Justice, Politics, and College Admissions (forthcoming, Rowman & Littlefield, spring 2004), and editor of Democracy and the Mass Media (Cambridge University Press, 1990). Since its inception in 1997 she has been director of the Committee on Politics, Philosophy, and Public Policy (also known as CP4), an interdisciplinary graduate program at the University of Maryland involving graduate students and faculty in Philosophy, Government and Politics, and the School of Public Affairs. She has served on the national advisory board of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, and has held visiting appointments at Harvard's Kennedy School, Yale University, Dartmouth College, and the University of Melbourne (Australia).
