Dr. Wachbroit came to the Institute in 1986 after teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1987 to 1991, he held a joint appointment in the Maryland Biotechnology Institute Center for Public Issues in Biotechnology. Currently, he is Adjunct Associate Professor of OB/GYN in the University's School of Medicine, as well as a Senior Research Fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University. He has written numerous articles in the areas of philosophy of science, philosophy of medicine, and medical ethics, including articles on the principles of disease classification, the challenges of genetic testing and diagnosis, and the problems inherent in risk characterization and risk communication. He is co-editor, with David Wasserman, of Genetics and Criminal Behavior: Methods, Meanings, and Morals (1998). In support of his research, he has received grants from the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He teaches the course on medical ethics, offered through the Philosophy Department, and a course on philosophical issues in the social sciences.
