The need for smarter growth in cities, suburbs and metropolitan regions has transformed institutions across America . It has brought together diverse groups searching for guidelines to channel economic development that is environmentally sound and cost-effective. The Maryland Smart Growth Leadership Program continues to support the State of Maryland 's agenda for improving quality of life and curbing urban sprawl through research and educational programs. The ten-day certificate program, run by the National Center for Smart Growth, is centered on leadership in the areas of environmental policy, community development, and infrastructure planning for growth management. Over 60 federal and over 60 state and local participants have already completed the program since its inception in 1998.
