Charles Field

 
     
 

 
Charles Field is a Senior Research Fellow and lecturer at the School of Public Affairs, University of Maryland at College Park where he teaches basic and advanced negotiation to graduate students. He also teaches negotiation to undergraduates in the University of Maryland Honors and Scholars Program. He teaches negotiation for the Office of Executive Programs, School of Public Affairs to government officials at the federal, state and local levels, and to non-profit groups. He also serves as a Friend to Conflict Management Group, an organization founded by Roger Fisher to deal with international and community conflicts. Dr. Field brings a rich background to the subject area being trained in Urban Planning (housing specialization) having earned a Masters and Doctorate in the field. He is an attorney and received his formal training in negotiation concepts and skills at the Harvard University Program on Negotiation.
 

 

 
 

In addition to teaching, Dr. Field also works with community and state groups. Recent activity includes community support to the Southern Mondawmin Community Association in West Baltimore providing organizational, negotiation, and strategic planning support. He has been working with the City of Hyattsville, Maryland in their capacity development activities for city council and key administrative personnel. He also teaches negotiation to public officials and non-profit officials in Smart Growth educational programs (both Maryland and national) provided by the University of Maryland National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education.

Dr. Field earned his Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from Harvard University, J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, Masters of Urban Planning from New York University and B.A. in government from Cornell University. He has written extensively on housing, housing policy, regulatory policy and negotiation/joint problem solving. Before joining the University of Maryland, he served as Staff Vice President and Regulatory Counsel for the National Association of Home Builders (1984-98) and worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Energy, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1971-84).
