Learning Objectives

Both the Maryland and the National Smart Growth Leadership Programs are designed to provide critical skills and knowledge to a diverse audience of interests.

With the Maryland Program local and state elected and career officials, industry leaders, and non-profit representatives attending this program will be enabled to actively participate in leading the changes in policies and culture within and between their agencies in land-use planning and Maryland Smart Growth.

The National Smart Growth Leadership Program is designed to provide critical skills and knowledge to a diverse audience of interests. Federal, State, Local, industry and non-profit policy makers, and career officials attending this program will be enabled to actively participate in leading the changes in policies and culture within and between their agencies.

At the conclusion of the program, both Maryland program and National program participants should understand:

The forces and unintended consequences of government and private sector actions that contribute to sprawl;
The core principles of Smart Growth and their implications for the development, revitalization and maintenance of vibrant communities;
The various policy tensions and conflicts that exist among governmental programs affecting Smart Growth and how to identify common ground and areas for collaboration; and
The ways in which they can take a leadership role in seeing that smart growth principles are reflected in policy and action.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t reach back to the program for some nugget gleaned from the faculty AND participants. My projects as well as my approach to the approval process for these projects have taken on a new dimension because of the exposure to the best practices in the nation I received from the program. I’m seriously considering a run for my state legislature in order to more fully deploy the strategies for true smart growth that are now part and parcel of not only WHAT I do but HOW I do it.”
