Maryland's State Constitution mandates "a system of public education in order to create a citizenry more capable of maintaining a free government." Maryland has also enacted a provision that requires specific instruction in civics. This law states: Schools shall require regular courses of instruction by the completion of the twelfth grade in the history of the United States, in civics, in the constitution of the United States, and in the government of the state of Maryland for the purpose of teaching, fostering and perpetuating the ideals, principles and spirit of political and economic democracy in America and increasing the knowledge of the organization and machinery of the government of the United States and of the State of Maryland.Maryland also requires that students take 3 credits of social studies including state and local government for high school graduation. Maryland currently tests civics topics though other tests that cover social studies and history but plans to institute a new test on civics topics soon. Student service learning is also a requirement for graduation. | |||||||||||||||
