First Amendment Schools: Educating for Freedom and Responsibility, co-sponsored by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and the First Amendment Center, is a national initiative designed to transform how schools model and teach the rights and responsibilities of citizenship that frame civic life in our democracy. The project has four primary goals:

  • Create consensus guidelines and guiding principles for all schools interested in creating and sustaining First Amendment principles in their school.
  • Establish project schools, in every region of the nation, where First Amendment principles are understood and applied throughout the school community.
  • Encourage and develop curriculum reforms that reinvigorate and deepen teaching about the First Amendment across the curriculum.
  • Educate school leaders, teachers, school board members and attorneys, and other key stakeholders about the meaning and significance of First Amendment principles and ideals.

To achieve these goals, the First Amendment Schools project serves as a national resource for all schools--K-12, public and private--interested in affirming First Amendment principles and putting them into action in their school communities.

WE have recently opened a discussion with the local Public Television station (WNED-17) and the Buffalo News about a curriculum-based collaboration to provide teachers with appropriate materials for classroom use.

I have been interested all my life in the possibilities for different forms of participatory democracy, in small town, neighborhoods, workplaces, associations (including "peak association" of workers and owners in different sectors of business). I have worked on town meetings, on workplaces, and on social movements. I have written recently on forms of descriptive representation. I am interested in "deliberative opinion polls," which bring representative samples of the public together to deliberate on public matters and in "living legitimacy" in non-liberal-democratic arenas. My current work, Everyday Feminism, shows how low-income, non-activist women engage in small struggles ("micronegotiations") for feminist ideas and practice in their everyday lives.

I train teachers in grades K-college to remodel portions of their existing curriculum around real-world, ill-structured problems. Organizing instruction around real problems, known as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), allows students to simultaneously construct new knowledge and practice the skills needed to become "expert" problem solvers. The use of PBL in civic education produces highly engaged learners who effectively store what they learn in long-term memory and are capable of (and interested in) transferring new knowledge to real-world situations.
