My work includes research
on social movements, especially the anti-nuclear European peace movements,
and on political socialization in the United States. The latter has been
connected with the effects of a unique model of election simulations developed
in collaboration with teachers in New York City.
Founding member of NACE,
with overall responsibility for this Website. Philosopher and author of
four books, including The New Progressive Era (2000), which has a section
on civic education.
I have been interested all my life in the possibilities for different
forms of participatory democracy, in small town, neighborhoods, workplaces,
associations (including "peak association" of workers and owners in different
sectors of business). I have worked on town meetings, on workplaces, and
on social movements. I have written recently on forms of descriptive representation.
I am interested in "deliberative opinion polls," which bring representative
samples of the public together to deliberate on public matters and in
"living legitimacy" in non-liberal-democratic arenas. My current work,
Everyday Feminism, shows how low-income, non-activist women engage in
small struggles ("micronegotiations") for feminist ideas and practice
in their everyday lives.

The National Association

Sponsored
by a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts, this project will develop

engagement.
The New Hampshire Institute
of Politics at Saint Anslem College is committed to working with local
and statewide community and educational partners to hel re-engage young
people in civic life. W are doing this through a variety of curricular,
co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs with Saint Anselm College
students, and a variety of off-campus programs targeting 16-25 year olds
in our state.
I have written a number
of articles and books on political socialization. Most recently, I have
been directly involved in civic education research, having co-authored
Civic Education: What Makes Students Learn (Yale, 1998). I am currently
beginning research on the 1998 NAEP civic assessment and on the 1988-1998
trend study.
The Civic Education Consortium
unites community partners, educators, children and youth to revitalize
civic education for young North Carolinians. We have developed priority
initiatives around four strategic goals aimed at both school and community-based
efforts, including a website of resources, small grants, teacher workshops
and an inventory of community-based curricula.
The Pennsylvania
Center for Civic Life advances the understanding and practice of teaching
and learning for democracy. The Center facilitates service, research
and program collaboration within Pennsylvania's State System and supports
a network of educators, students and citizens, serving schools, colleges
and communities across the country and around the world. For over
twenty years I have been an advocate for high quality liberal arts and
civic education. I ran the Office of the Bicentennial of the United
States Constitution at the National Endowment for the Humanites, established
the educational grants program at the Bicentennial Commisssion, and
was a Bradley-Olin Fellow in Civic Education at the University of Toronto.
I am currently the director of the American Studies program at the Enrichment
Centers, Humanites Scholar in Residence at Strayer University and the
editor of Artcyclopedia (www.artcyclopedia.com). PER is
a nonprofit, non-partisan, educational coalition of over 30 professional
organizations representing more than one million public employees and
retirees. PER's missions is to better inform Americans about the quality
of people in government and the services they provide; promote excellence
and esprit de corps within government; and, encourage people to consider
employment and careers in government at all levels. PER awards ten Public
Service Scholarships each year and annually sponsors Public Service
Recognition Week nationwide during the first full week in May. Eric

Foundation Urban Leadership Program The RFULP is a certificate program
offered by Oglethorpe University. In addition to completing coursework
on urban and metropolitan issues and leadership, students are requirement
to compile a record of leadership and involvement on and off campus.

will be able to "hit the ground running" as active participants
in the communities in which they settle after they graduate.
Pamela
S. Roach I am interested
in the role that education has in young people's political socialization.
My dissertation research examines the attitudes, perceptions, and political
knowledge of secondary social studies methods for students who will
become our future civic educators. Other interests include investigating
the influence of curriculum and instruction on political socialization. The Social
Studies Development Center conducts projects in civic education and
law-related education within the state of Indiana, nationally and internationally
in partnership with the Indiana State Bar Association. The ERIC Clearinghouse
for Social Studies/Social Science Education is funded by the U.S. Department
of Education and has been located since 1986 at the Social Studies Development
Center. The Clearinghouse collects and disseminates information on all
aspects of the social studies including civic education. The Clearinghouse
also publishes books and ERIC Digests; some of these publications pertain
to civic education, such as Education for Civic Engagement in Democracy:
Service Learning and Other Promising Practices, edited by Sheilah Mann
and John J. Patrick and published in 2000. Full texts of Digests on
topics in civic education can be found at our web site.
The mission of the Social
Science Education Consortium (SSEC) is to improve social science education
at all levels by promoting collaboration among social scientists and social
science educators. Among its recent projects are the "Educating for Citizenship"
annual conference in Colorado and the "Youth for Justice" national project.
Its publications include "Preparing Citizens: Linking Authentic Assessment
and Instruction in Civics/Law-Related Education."
St. Albans
School of Public Service will offer its students a course of study designed
to deepen their grasp of political theory, government, ethics, national
and global economics, and issue advocacy, and to build their leadership
skills. Students will be chosen on their academic preparation and commitment
to public service, not on their ability to pay. Leaders and practitioners
from government, business, non-profits, international organizations,
and media will work with students as instructors and mentors.
Kathleen Staudt, PhD
William J. Stepien I train
teachers in grades K-college to remodel portions of their existing curriculum
around real-world, ill-structured problems. Organizing instruction around
real problems, known as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), allows students
to simultaneously construct new knowledge and practice the skills needed
to become "expert" problem solvers. The use of PBL in civic education
produces highly engaged learners who effectively store what they learn
in long-term memory and are capable of (and interested in) transferring
new knowledge to real-world situations.
